Games

The chief designer of Sonic Mania, Christian Whitehead, has confirmed that the game’s physics have been “totally equated to modern-day 3D” in response to comparisons between the physics of classic Sonic games and those of Sonic Superstars. So, Superstars is running on the same Retro Engine as Mania, the 2011 Sonic CD transfer, the Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 mobile versions, and Origins.
It had already been deduced by fans that the similarities were there, with Twitter user Classic Sonic Deconstructed creating some outstanding side-by-sides to highlight the points of comparison. Whitehead chimed in after visual effects editor and artist LapperDev retweeted one of the comparisons. His response is given below:
“The physics in Mania were undeniably completely equated to modern 3D,” the author promised additional details “when the time is right.”
This follows a tweet from Whitehead on June 9 in which he gave a thumbs up to an estimate of a difference between different branches of physics. Many people have replied to Whitehead’s tweet, inquiring whether or not he has worked on the game, but he has, of course, declined to address the matter.
What little we do know comes from our conversation with Sonic Team’s leader Takashi Iizuka, who said Sonic Team is co-developing the video game alongside Arzest after apparently fruitless efforts to negotiate with Whitehead.
From what we’ve seen thus far, Sonic Superstars on Switch may be a comeback for the blue blur when it launches this autumn. Comment below and let us know whether you’re more excited about this than before.
